TEACHING. RESEARCH. SERVICE.

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is the second oldest public institution of higher education in Texas and is dedicated to fulfilling its land-grant mission of achieving excellence in teaching, research and service. About 46,000 academic degrees have been awarded since 1876, and the university’s enrollment now exceeds 8,000 students, including more than 2,000 graduate students from all over the United States and foreign countries. In the last five years, 5,970 degrees were awarded, including more than 2,400 graduate degrees.

A member of the Texas A&M University system, PVAMU offers baccalaureate degrees in 50 academic majors, 37 masters degrees and four doctoral degrees through nine colleges and schools. As such, this historically black university—the first state-supported college for African Americans in Texas—has an established reputation for producing strong African-American engineers, nurses and educators, always focusing on five core values.

ACCESS AND QUALITY
Prairie View A&M University provides equal educational opportunity to persons from unserved and underserved populations residing primarily among the economically and socially bypassed in society. PVAMU provides educational programs designed to prepare all graduates to compete successfully in the labor force as well as in graduate and professional schools.

DIVERSITY

Prairie View A&M University sustains its commitment to recruit, enroll, educate and graduate students and employ and advance faculty and staff regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, national origin, socioeconomic background or educationally unrelated handicap. PVAMU offers challenges to both academically talented and underprepared students who arrive in college with ability but without college-ready achievement.

LEADERSHIP
Prairie View A&M University stimulates, initiates and implements its programs and services to inspire and guide students, faculty and staff in developing self-confidence, self-discipline and other requisites for being successful leaders in their professions and communities. As such, PVAMU offers campus-based and distance-education programs to enhance the life chances for persons in its service areas.

RELEVANCE

Prairie View A&M University responds to the need for highly literate, technologically competent graduates that can excel in the 21st-century workforce. PVAMU also extends its research and service products to address concerns and solve problems like violence and abuse; drug and alcohol abuse; mental, physical and psychological neglect; environmental injustice; and other forms of social dissonance compromising the quality of human life.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Prairie View A&M University promotes active participation by its faculty, staff and students in constructive social change through volunteering, leadership and civic action. PVAMU also utilizes channels available for influencing public policy on the local, state, national and international levels.
