SHELL OIL COMPANY
CREATING POSITIVE IMPACT IN HOUSTON

Since 1912, Shell Oil Company has been operating in the United States of America. It’s hard to drive anywhere in the country without seeing the familiar yellow and red Shell “pecten” logo. With more than 25,000 gas stations in the United States (and another 18,000 around the world), Shell is truly an international company. Every 12 seconds, somewhere in the world an aircraft is refueled by Shell, which also is a major supplier of lubricants, biofuels, natural gas and the essential chemicals that make up everyday products, such as clothes, packaging, tires and carpets.

Shell refining and pipeline facilities are found in many states, and Shell has a large footprint in Houston. From its own refinery in the Port of Houston to its iconic office downtown to the bustling Woodcreek campus in the Energy Corridor, the history of Shell has been interwoven with the history of the Bayou City.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
While Shell certainly is known for its technical achievements, it is also recognized for its partnerships with local and national organizations that seek to improve communities, education and workforce development. Shell seeks out partners that give measureable benefit to the communities that use its services as well as those that employees call home. Through these partnerships with local nonprofit groups, Shell brings together resources to leverage their collective good.

Strong and healthy communities benefit all residents in the greater Houston area. Shell partners with diverse groups, such as the Houston Area Urban League, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and Target Hunger Houston. Another key partner is Neighborhood Centers, Inc (NCI), which has been doing good work in Houston since 1907.

CREATING POSITIVE IMPACT IN HOUSTON
The organization’s goal is to strengthen community engagement by improving financial well-being and increasing educational attainment in every community. Shell has provided volunteers for NCI on several occasions to do community center work in the East End and has co-hosted the “For Good” rally in front of City Hall, during which participants were asked to write down and commit to specific goals to make the city a better place.

Shell partners with the Houston Food Bank Backpack Buddy Program, ensuring that many children who rely on free or reduced-price school lunches do not go hungry on the weekends. On Fridays at participating schools and other locations children take home child-friendly, nonperishable, easily consumed and vitamin-fortified food that is given to them discreetly to avoid inviting unwanted attention. This year alone nearly 300,000 backpacks were distributed at area schools for at-risk youth served through the Backpack Buddy Program.

Shell also knows that to attract the brightest talent to Houston, the city must be recognized for the great place that it is. Shell is proud to support the vibrant art scene in Houston. The company’s support of the arts focuses on outreach projects that provide access to the arts for those who normally would not be able to experience them. Many of these programs are aimed at youth and are key to building lasting audiences for the arts and improving the city as a whole.

These initiatives are supported by a team of Shell volunteers clad in bring yellow T-shirts. When there is a need in the community, civic leaders know that they can call Shell, which can rally several hundred volunteers on short notice. The spirt of volunteerism is apparent throughout every Shell office and facility in the Houston area.

FUELING A FUTURE WORKFORCE
To remain competitive, the United States and companies like Shell depend on a future supply of highly qualified scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. As such, Shell’s education programs complement its efforts in developing a diverse workforce. Shell is building a technical workforce pipeline through partnerships with nongovernment organizations, community colleges and universities. This workforce ranges from hands-on welders and process technicians to geoscientists, chemists and engineers. These skilled men and women are needed to keep the country running, and Shell is proud of its role in this workforce development. All of these programs include outreach to the broader community, and several actively emphasize underrepresented communities and females.

OUR HOUSTON
The history of Shell Oil Company is best told through the efforts of its people—people whose imaginations, talents and hard work have produced many significant achievements. Shell is proud to call Houston home and looks forward to building a better community for all its citizens.
